The digital twin is coming of age

Virtual reality, with all the advantages of representation on the one hand, and sophisticated database models and process or algorithmic automation for control on the other – this is the approach that ultimately allows the highest degree of efficiency to be achieved. Thus, if graphical 3D planning leads to the triggering of ITIL-compliant change processes in the background, the reservation and execution of cable and power connections according to optimised criteria, the configuration, provisioning, and integration of systems into monitoring during processing, and the assignment of your company's service level agreements, network settings, authorisations, or addresses, then the digital twin has come of age and fulfills your deployment, delivery, and operating tasks to the highest degree.

Virtual Reality in the data centre

A brave new world! What sounded like „science fiction“ a few years ago is now a reality: the advent of virtual reality within IT operations and the data centre.

„Building Information Modelling“ (BIM) allows the building, building infrastructure, and plant management to be mapped and created in a 3D model as early as the planning phase, thus enabling virtual walkthroughs, option planning, and equipment configuration even before the actual existence of the trades.

But what about the IT technology installed? This is not just about the placement of IT cabinets and their equipment, but very particularly about ensuring smooth operation. From the discussions surrounding the DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) term, we have already learned that a smooth operation of IT technology requires far more than just optimising the PUE value or processing measured data.

Discussion with AixpertSoft about the digital twin

This year, the 360°dcLounge was once again held at Timmendorfer Strand. The organiser, Monika Grass, had chosen the motto „DigTWIN im Wolkenlos“ for it. On the sidelines of this event, Ralf Ladner, operator of netzpalaver.de this Interview with Holger Nickel, Managing Director of AixpertSoft GmbH.

One twin is not enough

The digital twin does not provide sufficient support for the data centre operator if, in addition to its 3D models, it does not also deliver specific views that are necessary for data centre security and planning.

Welcome to the world of the „digital twin“!

In addition to the 3D depiction of your data centre or IT room, AixBOMS offers many other structural and analytical graphics to support you in your daily tasks in change management, monitoring, and planning. Many of these are so-called „editors,“ i.e., graphics with context-dependent editing options, such as searching for affected services when a component fails, assigning an IP address, analysing connection paths, etc. Like all work with AixBOMS, they are optimised for quick and secure handling via pre-configured input masks, selection lists, and rule-based input control. Ultimately, a functioning IT infrastructure is the basis for successful business processes and can only be achieved with application-oriented tools.

Highlights

  • Integration of the network world: Cables, connections, paths, IPv6 and IPv4 addresses and network structures
  • Workflow Management: automated work processes for change management
  • Service Models: Representation, Management, and Dependency Relationships between Service and IT
  • Integration platform for tools and data from other disciplines or manufacturers
